Crafts SyllabusCrafts is a full year course offering one full credit in art.
A written midterm will be given at the end of the first semester and a written final given at the end of the year. Attendance is very important in this class because many tools and materials cannot be sent home to make up when absent. Project and material storage in the art room is very limited so all projects MUST be completed by due dates. Supplies might not be available to complete late projects. Students need to make an appointment with the teacher to make up work on Tuesdays or Thursdays after school. There is limited space to store the projects for the many students who will be taking art this year. Finished work might be displayed elsewhere in the school but once it is given back to the student it must soon to be removed from the art room. Artworks that have been given back to the student and are still in the room will be disposed of after a week to make room for additional projects. Late projects will not be accepted after the five-week marking report or marking period ends. Folded or crumpled projects will have points deducted. Class projects will count for the majority of each quarterly grade. Most projects will receive multiple grades. Typically a project will receive a grade for skill (has the students followed the procedures given so that finished artwork looks skillful rather than sloppy). Another grade is usually for creativity - originality and creative thinking is important in art, has the student taken the process that was taught and applied it creatively? Still another grade is for effort, has the student taken the time to think and plan, has the student carefully worked on the project or has he or she rushed to complete it. Each month a participation grade is given. Use or misuse of class time, participation in class discussions and critiques, and conduct will count toward this monthly grade. Low grades in this area will not be able to be compensated. Participation in critiques of both students’ art and professional art will be an important part of the participation grade. Artist vocabulary learned in class is expected to be used during critiques. The following is an example of class instructions and projects, many projects will be taken from the studio art class and the pottery and sculpture class: *For most projects Art History about various Artist, Art Movements, or Cultures that relate to the project will be given. *Introduction of clay *Elements and Principles of design applied to ceramics and sculpture *Methods of hand-building *Pinch pots * Creative Slab pots *Use of underglaze and glaze *Use of extruder and template *Creative Coil pot *Press mold project * Creative Underglaze project * Creative Tea Pot *Ceramic rose *Creative Masks made of clay *Sculpture using clay *Plaster sculptures *Realistic, abstract, and nonrepresentational subject matter using various materials *Sculptures in the round *Construction and assemblages (using various medium) *Sculpture project emphasizing various design principles *Cartooning *Graphing, enlarging, transferring *Block Lettering *One and Two Point Perspective *Oil Pastels *Watercolor and Mixed Media *Bead Work *Australian Aboriginal Dot Painting |
